Body Mass Index (BMI): How to Calculate BMI and What It Means

The Body Mass Index is a simplistic computation involving an individual’s weight and height that is used as a predictor for obesity or starvation levels. The bmi formula is very straightforward and has served as an effective diagnostic tool for individuals and health care providers since its invention by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet circa 1840. It really gained popularity from the US in the 1950s as obesity levels, and the health issues associated with them, skyrocketed.

How to calculate BMI:

1) Take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 703;
2) Call the result in #1 “A”;
3) Take your height in inches and square it (multiply it by itself);
4) Call the result from #3 “B”;
5) Divide A by B;

Figuring the Body Mass Index example:

In this example, we will assume that an individual weighs 135 pounds and is 5-foot 4-inches (64 inches tall):

Step 1: Multiply 135 by 703 to get 95,905
Step 2: A = 95,905;
Step 3: Multiply 64 by itself (64 x 64) to get 4096;
Step 4: B = 2816;
Step 5: Divide A by B (95,905 divided by 4096); to get 23.17;

The Body Mass Index in the above example has been computed to be 23.17.

Now, what does that mean?

As you have seen, plugging variables of weight and height into the BMI formula is a simplistic process. When you determine what your BMI is, you need to simply see where your result falls in the following chart:

Starvation:

less than 15

Anorexic:

less than 17.5

Underweight:

less than 18.5

Ideal:

18.5 to 25

Overweight:

from 25 to 30

Obese:

from 30 to 40

Morbidly Obese:

greater than 40

So, our example person above would be considered to have an ideal body weight.

There are also convenient BMI graphs to allow you to avoid any computing at all. Simply find your weight and height and then follow them to where they intersect. (Note there is a slight discrepancy in the exact values between these two charts.)

Body Mass Index Graph:

It is important to realize that the BMI formula was derived to predict fat percentage levels in individuals with average body frames, bone density and muscle mass. Therefore it is possible to get erroneous readings.

For instance, two men who may both be 6-foot 4-inches tall and weigh 245 pounds may both be considered obese on the Body Mass Index graph above. However, one of them may be a bodybuilder with very low body fat percentage and the other a severely overweight man that has not exercised in 20 years.

There are limitations to the BMI formula that affect its validity as an effective diagnostic tool. However, in most instances, it can be a beneficial, and free, utility.

Your Body Mass Index is simply a ratio between your weight and height that is used to give a general representation of your body fat levels.

BMI: Understanding the Facts about the Body Mass Index  Using the body mass index (BMI) formula provides a simplistic method to diagnose potential obesity problems. Although it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is recognized by worldwide health professionals as an effective diagnostic tool.
